Dylan fights for lost causes. Probably because she used to be one.

"4 stars — Oh, I enjoyed this one much more than the first one. I felt like the story resolved a lot better at the end. There were still storylines that I almost wish I had more of, otherwise I don’t know why they were included, but all in all much happier!

I will admit, one of the reasons this one didn’t rate higher for me is that I didn’t really understand why Silas hung out with Levi and participated in the bet in the first book. It just didn’t feel like it worked with the Silas I got to know in this book, and I guess I wanted something there. I really enjoyed the Silas we got in this book. He had a lot of depth, and while I wouldn’t have minded an even deeper look into his background, I was satisfied enough with what we learned about how he grew up. And I felt like it reasonably explained why he was how he was. I will admit that I was not quite as satisfied with how the anger management issues were dealt with…which, wasn’t really at all. Be calmer? How is that sustainable? Did he really deal with his past in the end? Meh. I guess what I liked most about him was how sweet he could be with Dylan. I enjoyed seeing how she awakened another side of himself. I also appreciated how he grew with Williams…at least that was moving in a good direction.

Dylan was an interesting character herself. I thought she was a good foil for Silas, because she had passion, but she was also sweet and more innocent? I appreciated the internal struggle she was going through — wanting to please everyone else, but finally realizing that she was losing herself in the process. I wish I’d been able to see how her relationship with her family played out, but I did enjoy seeing her put herself first.

I LOVED the chemistry between them — from their meet cute in the holding cell to the steamy scenes they shared. I loved seeing Silas care about Dylan, and want and feel more. The only bummer for me was that I didn’t always like how Dylan saw the relationship…I know she was supposed to be convincing herself to downplay her feelings, but I didn’t always feel the feelings first and then the downplay if that makes sense.

I appreciated all the secondary characters in the story as well. It makes me even more intrigued about Brookes, and of course Stella…which is a bit of a bummer since this series seems to have stalled after the next book. So I’m super excited that we get Torres’s book at least, b/c he was freaking hilarious in this story. I also really loved Matt, and would have enjoyed even more from him.

So happy I enjoyed myself more than the first book. These stories have so much potential, and I think part of me is bummed that not all of that potential is met, you know? Still a solid new adult book though."

All Broke Down A Rusk University Novel Cora Carmack 9780062326225 Books Reviews

  • I’ve put off writing this review for quite awhile just because I’ve had a difficult time deciding how best to address my feelings without spoiling the book. Not only is Cora one of my favorite authors, but I’m lucky enough to consider her to be a friend, too, which has made it that much more difficult for me to write this one.

If you’d have asked me how I felt about the book anytime up until about the 90% mark, I would have said it was Cora’s best work yet. I love how Cora finds a way to mix sweet and sexy, awkward and endearing and funny and serious together in her writing. And, there is no doubt, All Broke Down is her sexiest work to date. *Fans self* But, more than sexy, All Broke Down was a very real look at college life. And, you know, it made me fall in love with a character I didn’t really like going into the book. It’s in the last 10% of the book that my feelings changed drastically, but I’ll get to that.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Silas in All Lined Up. I thought he was a real jerk and a player and just not someone I could ever have any respect for. But, there was so much more to his character than met the eye and I fell in love with him during All Broke Down. He didn’t have a great past and his family was awful. It’s no wonder he behaved like he did. I loved to see him try to put all that behind him and become a better man once he met Dylan. I’m definitely Team Silas now. That is one swoony and sexy man.

I have to be honest and say it took awhile for Dylan to grow on me. There wasn’t anything particularly off-putting about her, but I just didn’t feel the immediate connection with her that I often do with characters. There’s no denying, however, that Silas felt that immediate connection. The chemistry between them was there from the start and they went with it. As you do when you have nothing to lose. I really did love the two of them together. The sparks between them jumped from the page and I loved how Dylan challenged Silas to be a better man… and how he rose to the challenge.

I was loving life, loving this book and anxious to see how it would all end for Silas and Dylan when I hit the last portion of the book. *****(I will probably get a little spoilery here, so don’t continue on if you don’t want to run the risk of having the plot spoiled.)***** This was when the rug was totally pulled out from under me with a most unwelcome turn of events. And because of when it happened, there just wasn’t enough time to rectify the situation and take me back to the time when I was in love with All Broke Down. Instead of the hearts and flowers and puppies I was expecting from Silas and Dylan, a much-loved character in the book was the victim of a crime. I was angry. My heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest and, to be perfectly honest, it ruined the book for me. I just can’t separate out the parts I loved from the part I didn’t.

What happened to this character is something that, sadly, happens in real life. I’m not naive. But, in my opinion, it was totally out of place in this book and was completely unnecessary. It didn’t further the plot or help redeem Silas in any way, which was, to me, the overall theme of this book. If anything, I feel it took away from what should have been time spent focused on Silas and Dylan and their relationship. I’m greedy. I like seeing couples I love doing coupley things. That’s not what I got here.

Now, all that said, I have faith that Cora will find a way to pull the story back around and lessen the pain of what happened in this book. I’m really disappointed the next book in the Rusk University series is not this character’s book, though. I hate to have to wait even longer to find out what happens to her.

I’ve seen lots of reviews written by people who absolutely loved this book. I wish I had been one of them. If I was writing my review solely on the first 90% of this book, it would have been a solid five-star rating. I loved so much of it, but I just can’t with that ending.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.

  • 3.5. I really think Cora Carmack can do no wrong. I have enjoyed all her books and this one was no exception. Dylan and Silas are great characters and a perfect match. I really didn't think I would like Silas that much after the first book, but the author gave him heart. Dylan wasn't perfect either, but they both owned up to their flaws and worked through them.
I would have given this a five, but I found the incident involving Stella towards the end very disturbing. Not enough attention was paid to what happened to her. It was quite a tragic incident involving a character that we've known since the beginning and there was no resolution. This plot point was unnecessary for this story and the issue needs to be addressed fully, not just used as a catalyst to show us the good side of Silas.
The HEA for the two main characters was very satisfying. It was nice to catch up with Carson and Dallas as well. Besides the Stella incident, it was a great story.
Keep writing Ms. Carmack and please give Stella justice in her own story.
